Amsterdam is one of the best places to visit during NYE, as one of Europe’s party capitals. Amsterdam offers a full spectrum of events and club nights to suit all musical tastes and styles. Pick a massive party or a more intimate one, a party in a club or hotel, for everybody there is a right party. But make sure what to expect when it comes to traditions and safety, because it’s allowed in Amsterdam to use fireworks everywhere and it can be a little bit of a battle field around 12-ish on the streets.
Official firework show
In 2015, the Oosterdok will once again be the location for the city’s official celebrations, with the VOC Ship The Amsterdam and the Scheepvaartmuseum forming the backdrop for a spectacular New Year’s Eve event and dazzling fireworks display. If you’re out elsewhere in the city, fireworks traditionally illuminate the night sky above the Amstel – an attractive spot from which to enjoy the spectacle on the skyline is the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge).
On New Year’s Eve (and the month leading up to it), the Dutch enjoy traditional sweet treats called ‘oliebollen’ (delicious round doughnuts coated with icing sugar) and ‘appelflappen’ (tasty apple fritters). They can be found at stands across the city. On the 31th, expect large queues of people ordering oliebollen, so visit early or order before so you just have to pick them up.
Buy/reserve your goods early
If you’re planning on buying some champagne and sparklers for the big 12, make sure you get them as soon as possible, especially if you’re planning on doing some shopping in the city center. If you wanna eat out, make sure you make reservations as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. It’s strongly advised to buy the tickets for the party you’re planning on going to also in advance!
Some of the most popular city spots will be equipped with first aid posts, dealing with everything from dehydration to minor injuries. You’ll find the first aid posts at:
- Dam Square (positioned along the street at Beursplein)
- Nieuwmarkt (by the Nieuwmarkt police station)
- Leidseplein (by the police station at Lijnbaansgracht 219)
- Rembrandtplein (by the square)
Make sure you always know how to use the firework you wanna lit and never pick them up from the ground to re-use them! There is a reason somebody left them there..
Optional are firework glasses to make sure no firework is getting to your eyes. And if you wanna cycle to a party on the other side of the city, do it before 22-ish, if you’re afraid of firework.
Haven’t found a party just yet? Check out this full list of parties across the city. Most NYE parties are on the list, from more premium parties to the ‘normal’ priced parties. Bigger and better parties of this year are techno party Awakenings, the party in Volkshotel, Freaqshow in the Ziggo Dome and Ball Masque in Paradiso.
